DAVID DICK 1930-2010

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of David Dick, who passed away this week at his home in his native Bourbon County Kentucky. He was 80.

He was a former CBS News correspondent and bureau chief. David worked at CBS from 1966 to 1985, winning an Emmy for his coverage of the assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate George Wallace. He also served as South American bureau chief from 1978-1979.

After his years at CBS, David went on to become Director of the University of Kentucky's School of Journalism. He and his wife Lalie own Plum Lick Publishing and together they have written over a dozen books on their beloved state of Kentucky and its people.

I had the pleasure of meeting David and doing a book signing with him and his lovely wife Lalie last year at Historic Penn Store. It was such an honor! He will be sadly missed.

COOKBOOK UPDATE.

We now have over 230 recipes for the Tennessee Celebrity Cookbook.

I just received a recipe from John Schorr, President of Sun Studios Memphis. He sent Elvis’s Fried Banana Pie.

Sun Studios located on Beale Street is the legendary recording studio, and birthplace of rock and roll, widely known for recording Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash.

We also have received recipes with other Elvis ties! The Banana Pudding recipe the cook at Graceland always kept fresh in the refrigrator. This came from the folks at Graceland.

The Jordanaires were one and the same with Elvis for years. Ray Walker, their fabulous bass singer sent his wife's recipe for Corn Chowder. He said he had been married to Marilyn for 55 years and she and the corn chowder got better every year. I loved that!

Gospel Music was a big part of Elvis’s life. The Stamps Quartet sang with Elvis in all of his gospel recordings. The original lead singer Ed Enoch has graciously agreed to send us a recipe.

This is so exciting! I believe all these wonderful people sent recipes as they knew the cookbook is to be used as a fundraiser for various non-profit organizations all across Tennessee. We have already had several organizations that have sold the Kentucky Cookbook that want to sell the Tennessee one as well.

I think God is constantly creating opportunities for the Cookbook and fun activities for me.

This weekend I had the pleasure to do a book signing at ROMP “River Of Music Party” , sponsored by the International Bluegrass Museum. It was so much fun. They had bluegrass bands from as far away as Japan, Hungary, and Sweden. Bill Monroe would have been pleased.

One of the most interesting bands was the Professors of Bluegrass, who are all professors at Yale and their Bass Player is the Provost there.

Bluegrass is the official State Music of Kentucky, and Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky" shares with Stephen Foster's "My Old Kentucky Home" the honorable distinction of being the official Kentucky State Songs. The infectiously energetic style of dance that grew up around bluegrass and old time music is clogging, the official Kentucky State Dance.

The International Bluegrass Museum, established to preserve the history of the music Mr. Monroe created, is located 30 minutes from the little town of Rosine, Kentucky, and Jerusalem Ridge, the homeplace where he was born and grew to manhood, and where he and members of his family now rest in peace.

The International Bluegrass Music Museum is located in the RiverPark Complex in downtown Owensboro, Kentucky. As you draw near, you'll hear the sounds of bluegrass music emanating from the museum's radio station, RBI, with audio speakers taking the music to the streets. Only a few hundred feet from the museum's entrance, the sound of music drifts downstream via the mighty Ohio River, the subject of more than a few memorable bluegrass songs.

Book Fair In Elizabethtown KY

THE BOOKFAIR WAS A SUCCESS!!!

Authors with Hardin County connections will be among the dozens expected to participate in the Almost Famous Authors’ Faire, an event free to the public Saturday at Towne Mall in Elizabethtown.

The event, which wiis from noon to 7 p.m., is an opportunity to meet authors from Kentucky and neighboring states who will be available to autograph their books.

Fort Knox author Nelda Shattles Copas is scheduled to participate in the fair. Her book, “Twisted Desire,” is a murder mystery set in Bowling Green, and she was a workshop presenter at the International Mystery Writer’s Festival in Owensboro this year.

Retired from the U.S. Army, Copas earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology/criminology and a master’s degree in mental health counseling.

She later worked in a variety of roles including victim advocate, drug and alcohol treatment counselor, therapist and social worker. From these occupations she gained experience working with law enforcement personnel.

Though Kentucky author Pamela Whinnery is from Paducah, her book “Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities” includes entries by Hardin Countians Amy Dudgeon and Becca Owsley.

Among actress Dudgeon’s credits are appearances on TV’s “House,” “Las Vegas,” “ER” and “Desperate Housewives.”

Owsley is a features writer for The News-Enterprise.

Dudgeon’s recipe is Baked Brie while Owsley’s is Spinach, Almond and Strawberry Salad.

Whinnery’s cookbook has been used for fundraising efforts by numerous organizations. Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook on Saturday will be donated to a team from Springfield for The American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

AFAF was formed to promote authors at fairs by bringing them together with readers. Authors pay AFAF for table space at the fair and keep all profits from their sales.

I had the opportunity to meet this week with members of H.O.R.S.E.S. Inc. This is a wonderful organization. The members are part of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center designed for individuals with physical, mental, or emotional challenges. They are a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization that is run entirely on grants, donations and with the assistance of volunteers.

Their instructors are certified by NARHA through a stringent training course and continuing education. Classes are designed for the needs of each individual. They also have a licensed Physical Therapist and offer Hippo Therapy, which is physical therapy on horseback using the horse as a tool to achieve maximum benefit for the rider.

They are expanding their services to include Speech and Occupational Therapy. If you are interested in finding out about their services, volunteering (you and your horse), or working as a licensed therapist go to their website:

H.O.R.S.E.S. Inc. will be participating in a booth at various County Fairs across Western Kentucky to promote their services and will be selling my cookbook “Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities” at their booth as a fundraiser.

For all the horse lovers out there the cookbook has a recipe for a cookie you can make for your horse. It was contributed by Old Friends Equine, which provides a home for retired racehorses. The horse that starred in Seabiscuit lives on the farm. The cookbook also has recipes from Kentucky Derby Museum, The Red Mile, Keeneland, and the singing Cowgirl Dale Evans.

Writer & actress Reagan Payne was born & raised in Murray, KY. Having graduated cum laude from Sewanee, she has performed in Theatre, film, & television, including co-staring in “Charmed” & “The Closer.” Reagan sent a recipe for Homemade Honey Granola for my Kentucky Cookbook.

May and June are traditionally the months when the American Cancer Society conducts Relay For Life Events across Kentucky.

This year we have had an opportunity to be a small part of this program. This is special to me as my father Wilson Allcock had cancer and passed away in 2001. I think he knows that I am helping with this and is pleased!
