FROM CORVETTES TO OUTHOUSES
Recipe from Kentucky Down Under included in The Kentucky Cookbook!!!
Author and Kentucky native
Pam Whinnery will be signing her Celebrity Cookbooks this weekend, Saturday,
June 30 at the Horse Cave, KY Book Fest 2012, along with over 100 authors from
across the nation. Whinnery’s book signing of both her Kentucky and Tennessee cookbooks
is serving as a fundraiser for the Kentucky Repertory Theatre.
Now in its sixth printing the
cookbook, “Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities” is a celebration of all
things Kentucky. It not only has recipes from famous celebrities such as Bill
Monroe, Ashley Judd, and magician Lance Burton, but recipes from various
historical locations, tourist attractions, and unique Kentucky celebrations.
The bestselling author has
had the opportunity to participate in several of these incredible celebrations.
Joe Pruitt, organizer of the National Corvette Homecoming ask her to do a book
signing at the event as a fundraiser for the Bowling Green Chapter of the
American Cancer Society. The Annual Homecoming is in Bowling Green, which is
the home of the only Corvette plant in the world and the National Corvette
Museum.
Probably the most unusual and
fun event is the Annual Great Outhouse Blowout Race held at Penn’s Store in
Gravel Switch, KY (near Danville). The September event is carried live on ESPN.
The celebration first started in 1992 as an Outhouse Dedication Ceremony at America's
oldest country store, still in ownership and operation by the same family since
1845. The historic '92 event included performances by Chet Atkins and Bill
Edd Wheeler. Dawn Lane Osborn, granddaughter of Alma 'Tincy'
Penn invited Pam to do a book signing as a fundraiser for Penn’s Store and its
OUTHOUSE, which are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, a
Kentucky Historical Landmark, and a Kentucky Centennial Business.
Her second cookbook “Country Goodness Recipes of
Tennessee Celebrities,” which is in its third printing has recipes from Reese
Witherspoon, Elvis, & basketball legend Lionel Hollins. The cookbook was
part of a book signing by the author and John Carter Cash at the 40th
Annual Museum of Appalachia Fall Homecoming. This celebration is honoring Appalachian
Folk life through music and crafts.
Come join the fun this Saturday, 10am-6pm at Horse
Cave, KY. If you cannot attend this amazing book event, but would like a copy
of Whinnery’s cookbooks, or
would like to use them as a fundraiser for a non-profit organization in your
community, you may contact the author at: Pamela Whinnery, 5754 Lovelaceville
Rd. Paducah, KY, 42001; e-mail whinneryw@bellsouth.net, or she can be reached
at 270-554-5332. For more information on the cookbooks, go to her website:
https://sites.google.com/site/celebritycookbooks/home
The suggested retail price is $19.95 each with 50% of the cost going to the
non-profit organization.

Earl Scruggs 1924-2012

EARL SCRUGGS
1924-2012
Bluegrass legend and banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs, who helped profoundly change country music with Bill Monroe in the 1940s and later with guitarist Lester Flatt, has died. He was 88.
Mr., Scruggs graciously contributed a recipe to my Tennessee cookbook “Country Goodness Recipes of Tennessee Celebrities.” He was best known for “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” a rollicking number recorded in 1949 with the group the Foggy Mountain Boys. The song was used as the getaway music in the 1967 film “Bonnie and Clyde”; and “The Ballad of Jed Clampett,” the theme song of the 1960s television sitcom “The Beverly Hillbillies,” which he performed with Lester Flatt.
He also helped shape the “high, lonesome sound” of Bill Monroe, often called the father of bluegrass, and pioneered modern banjo playing. His innovative use of three fingers in an up-picking style, rather than the mostly two-fingered claw-hammer down-picking technique,
elevated the five-string banjo to a lead or solo instrument.

His family is in our thoughts and prayers. He will be greatly missed.

Ruth Hunt Candy

Ruth Hunt Candy
3 Days and Counting until Kentucky Crafted: The Market. The next few days I will do blogs on a couple of contributors to the Kentucky Cookbook Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities, who also will be participating in The Market.
When you go to The Market in Lexington this week, be sure to check out Ruth Hunt Candies, which is located in Booth 417 in the Specialty Foods Section. They contributed a recipe to the cookbook for “Blue Monday Cream Pie”, which is made from their Blue Monday Candy Bars.
About Ruth Hunt Candy: It all began in the kitchen of her Mt. Sterling, Kentucky home, where Ruth Tharpe Hunt served homemade sweets to her bridge club. In 1921 she decided to start a small candy business. Today, still located in Mt. Sterling, Ruth Hunt Candies remains a Kentucky landmark.
Ruth Hunt continually adds products to her list. Today there are approximately 70 kinds of candy. They are proud to be celebrating their 91st year in business and are so appreciative of all their customers for the support over the years!

MUSEUM OF APPALACHIA FALL HOMECOMING

JOHN RICE IRWIN HAS INVITED ME TO DO A BOOK SIGNING AT THIS YEARS HOMECOMING. IT IS SUCH AN HONOR. MY FATHER-IN-LAW WAS THE LEATHER CRAFTSMAN FOR THE HOMECOMING SINCE IT FIRST STARTED.

Homcoming is a wonderful tradition. Authentic, old-music fills the air at the Museum of Appalachia’s Tennessee Fall Homecoming in Norris, TN, Oct. 7-9. With musicians performing simultaneously all day on five different stages, seasoned festival-goers stop at the information tent for the daily music schedule to plan their day. Some 400 nationally and regionally known musicians will perform traditional mountain, folk, Gospel, and bluegrass music throughout the three-day event. The Homecoming is internationally renowned as one of the oldest and most authentic festivals of its kind.
Homecoming also includes demonstrations of pioneer skills, a large craft fair with authentic Appalachian artisans, and traditional Southern foods.
Tickets are available at the gate; plenty of free parking is available. The Museum offers a picturesque backdrop, with dozens of authentic log buildings, display halls filled with artifacts, and garden and farm animals surrounded by split-rail fences.
All Homecoming proceeds go toward the Museum’s mission to preserve Appalachian culture & heritage. A non-profit organization, the Museum is an official affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

40TH ANNUAL REELFOOT LAKE ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL

40TH ANNUAL REELFOOT LAKE ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL
Sept. 30 to Oct. 2
I will be signing the cookbook “Country Goodness Recipes of Tennessee Celebrities" at the Bi-Centennial Committee’s booth (NO 61) as a fundraiser for them.
Working with the state parks and local authorities, the festival has grown since 1971 to an estimated crowd of over 45,000 people & 300 different vendors in 2010 The festival is always held on the first weekend with an October date in it. There is free entertainment with artists from the area. People come and sit in the shade to enjoy old time string music and singing.
Come enjoy the festival and soak up on the local flavor as well. Great restaurants, great fishing, beautiful scenery with nature walks along the lake; we look forward to sharing it with you.
Celebrating 200 Years of Reelfoot Lake
1811/1812 -- 2011/2012
..."On the 16th of December, 1811, about two o'clock, a.m., we were visited by a violent shock of an earthquake," writes Eliza Bryan, a resident of the area at the time. The quakes continued, almost daily, until February 7, 1812, when the most violent of all occurred. In Eliza's words, "At first the Mississippi seemed to recede from its banks, and its waters gathering up like a mountain...then rising fifteen to twenty feet...and expanding, as it were, at the same moment, the banks were overflowed with the retrograde current, rapid as a torrent...the river falling immediately, as rapid as it had risen...and lately it has been discovered that a lake was formed on the opposite side of the Mississippi, in the Indian country."1
This is how Reelfoot Lake was formed, a natural phenomenon, a cypress forest covered with water from the mighty Mississippi River when it flowed backwards for a time.
The complete eyewitness account by Eliza Bryan can be found on the New Madrid Earthquake website.
