West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville, TN will host its annual I-40 Exit 56 Blues Festival May 28, 2011 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. They have invited me to do a book signing as a fundraiser for the Center. I will do a couple of Blogs in the next couple of weeks on places and events with Blues connections, who also contributed recipes to the Tennessee cookbook.

I have exciting news! I have been selected for the second year to participate in the Kentucky State Book Fair. I will do a book signing of the just released “Country Goodness Recipes of Tennessee Celebrities.”

My cookbook “Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities” will also be available, if you did not get a signed copy last year. It was 8th in overall sales from a selection of 200 authors and 523 books at last year’s book fair.

Here is your chance to get great gifts for family, friends, and yourself.

About the book fair:

The Book Fair, November 13th, opens at 9:00 a.m. to the public and continues until 4:00 p.m. There will be over 200 authors from across Kentucky. The books with authors are in Rows based on subject. The cookbooks and books on bourbon or with ties to bourbon will be to the extreme right in ROW 10 and ROW 3. As of now, my cookbooks are in the back area in ROW 3, which is next to the children’s books. JUST GO RIGHT AND KEEP WALKING! YOU WILL FIND US! :-)

About the cookbook:

There are recipes for Elvis, Trace Adkins, authors Sam Pickering and Tom Schulman (of Dead Poet’s Society fame), Paypal Founder David O. Sacks, and Lovelace Café (and no they did not send their biscuit recipe.)

St. John’s Parrish Picnic gets bigger each year, so that it came to be called "The Biggest Little Picnic in Western Kentucky." It is now held the first Saturday after Labor Day, and the proceeds are totally dedicated to St. John and St. Mary parochial schools of the parish.

Barbecued ribs, chicken, pork, and mutton are served, along with hot dogs, drinks and popcorn, funnel cakes, ice cream. Games include bingo, bottle toss, cake wheel, can throw, coin toss, free throw, and ping-pong.

Politicians are always on hand to give speeches, and this year includes Jack Conway. Rand Paul (candidate for U.S. Senate), Rep. Ed Whitfield, Governor Steve Beshear all of whom I have recipes.

130TH FANCY FARM PICNIC

The 130th Fancy Farm Picnic will be this next Saturday Aug. 7. It is drawing major news coverage, NOT because of the book signing I have been invited to do during the picnic, but because of the Nov. Senatorial race. Republican Candidate & Tea Party supported Rand Paul (son of Presidential candidate Ron Paul) and Democratic candidate Attorney General Jack Conway should draw major crowds. It is being shown live on KET and will be shown for the first time on C-Span.

Fancy Farm Picnic is famous as a traditional political gathering attracting statewide and occasionally national candidates. The picnic began in 1880 as a purely local affair. It takes place mostly on the grounds of Fancy Farm Elementary School. Since 1956 it has been held on the first Saturday in August. It has come to represent the traditional starting point of the fall campaign season in Kentucky.

The picnic was of purely local interest until A.B. "Happy" Chandler began making appearances, going for the first time in 1931 while running for Lieutenant Governor.

National figures that have made speeches include George C. Wallace and Al Gore. Vice President Alben Barkley, known for his oratorical skills, spoke many times over the years before his death in 1956.

In addition to the political appearances, the picnic offers traditional fair activities like Craft items, book signings, bingo, and raffle prizes. Food includes barbecue, a Knights of Columbus fish fry, and homemade baked goods.

The event was recognized in the 1985 Guinness Book of World Records as the "World's Largest Picnic", for the consumption of 19,000 pounds of mutton, pork, and chicken. The picnic is profitable and proceeds are used to finance local improvements. About 12,000 to 15,000 people attend each year.

GUESS WHICH CANDIDATE DID NOT SEND A RECIPE FOR THE NEW KENTUCKY CELEBRITY COOKBOOK!

Three months ago, I attended the Fancy Farm Picnic. All four of the candidates running for Senator in 2010 were there and gave speeches.

It had so much fun! I did a blog on the picnic, as I am working on 2 more cookbooks, another one for Kentucky, and one on Celebrities from Tennessee.

I wanted recipes from each of the candidates. I had an opportunity to speak with each of them and their staff. They all promised to send recipes. The staff ask me to send them reminders, which I did.

I really wanted recipes from each of them as I had recipes in the first cookbook from Senator Mitch McConnell, Governor Steve Beshear, and all of the Kentucky U. S. Representatives.

Here are the results:

Attorney General Jack Conway and his wife Elizabeth sent a recipe for “Pork, Chicken, and Sausage Jambalaya

Secretary of State Trey Grayson sent a recipe that his wife makes. Nancy Grayson’s Artichoke Dip

Lt. Governor Dan Mongiardo likes to cook and sent a recipe with Venison. Dr. Dan’s Deerly Loved Lasagna

And Dr. Ron Paul son of former Presidential Candidate Rand Paul… Well! We are still waiting.

Probably no one politically connected reads this blog, but if they did, it would be interesting to hear some comments on why they think he and his staff promised to send a recipe and did not follow through.

It is a minor thing, but the cookbooks are used as fundraisers for non-profit organizations and it would have been encouraging to know that all the candidates followed through on their promises. Especially since, we were not asking for money or political favors.

We have just returned from doing a book signing for the American Red Cross, at the 28th Annual National Corvette Homecoming in Bowling Green, Kentucky. WOW! Was that fun? Bowling Green is the home of the only Corvette plant in the world and the National Corvette Museum. There were so many COOL cars. I saw one 1960 black Corvette with red leather seats and interior. Talking to the owners was great fun.

These car lovers will never let go of their corvettes.

"I fell in love with Corvettes back in 1962 when I was a child. I've always loved them. My wife and I own 4 right now," notes Corvette owner Bob Wallace. Its that love, along with a lot of horsepower, that brought Wallace up from Florida for the "National Corvette Homecoming." His 1962 Corvette Convertible is what Wallace calls a 'survivor" car since all of its parts are original from the day it was rolled onto the lot.

Bowling Green native, Rodey Grimes discussing his 1970 Corvette Stingray "Growing up, my dad always had a Corvette. So its kind of been a family tradition for me," he recalls. Now, he takes pride in his own vehicle, which he rebuilt from scratch. "It was completely disassembled. Some parts, a lot of parts that you can't find or can't buy anymore are sandblasted and re-painted to look like new," says Grimes.

Then there are the enthusiast who came from as far away as Norway such as Oskar Lilleaas and Christian Lilleaas.

And Ontario, Canada "It's worth it," said Margaret Adams, a Corvette owner from Ontario, Canada. "We love the United States. We love traveling down here, so we'll drive any distance to be down here.” They don't mind traveling because of their passion for Corvettes.” We’ve had them since 1985," said Glenn Adams, also of Ontario. "We still have the '85, and we bought a new one last year."

A CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS KENTUCKY

Paducah, KY- Author and Kentucky native Pam Whinnery has four book signings schedule across Kentucky over the next 4 months. Each of the book signings are serving as a fundraiser for a non-profit organization.

Now in its second printing the cookbook, “Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities” is a celebration of all things Kentucky. It not only has recipes from famous celebrities with ties to Kentucky, but recipes from various historical locations, tourist attractions, and unique Kentucky celebrations.

Pam will be participating in one of theses celebrations July 18th. Joe Pruitt, organizer of the National Corvette Homecoming ask her to do a book signing at the event as a fundraiser for the Bowling Green Chapter of the American Red Cross. The 28th Annual Homecoming will be held at the Sloan Convention Center in Bowling Green, which is the home of the only Corvette plant in the world and the National Corvette Museum.

Culpepper Place located at Holt Rd. in Paducah, KY will be hosting a book signing August 7th as a fundraiser for Paducah Cooperative Ministry. The activities director thought the cookbook would be of special interest to the residents, their families, and friends, because of recipes submitted by family members of Alben Barkley, Dale Evans, D.W. Griffith, and John Scope.

Probably the most unusual event will be the 17th Annual Great Outhouse Blowout Race held at Penn’s Store in Gravel Switch, KY (near Danville). The September 12th event is carried live on ESPN. The celebration first started in 1992 as an Outhouse Dedication Ceremony at America's oldest country store, still in ownership and operation by the same family since 1845. The historic '92 event included performances by Chet Atkins and Billy Edd Wheeler. Dawn Lane Osborn, granddaughter of Alma 'Tincy' Penn Lane invited Pam to do a book signing as a fundraiser for Penn’s Store and its OUTHOUSE, which are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, a Kentucky Historical Landmark, and a Kentucky Centennial Business

Pam has been invited by the Grand River’s Chamber of Commerce to do a book signing at the Hunters Moon Festival, Saturday Oct. 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. as a fundraiser for the Chamber.
