I will be participating in the 2011 Southern Kentucky Book Fest. The Director, Tracy Harkins has invited me to do a panel discussion. I am so honored and humbled by this invitation. My table number at the Book Fest is 44 and the presentation time is 12:00.

The Southern Kentucky Book Fest is one of the state's largest literary events and is presented by WKU Libraries, Warren County Public Library, and Barnes and Noble Booksellers. Held annually during National Library Week, the Book Fest draws thousands of readers of all ages who welcome the occasion to meet their favorite authors and purchase signed copies of their books. The 13th Annual 2011 SOKY Book Fest is a fundraiser for the promotion of literacy in the Bowling Green community. This year’s Book Fest is on Saturday, April 16 and is from 9 am to 4 pm.

GOV. NED McWHERTER 1930-2011

Former Gov Ned McWherter passed away yesterday, April 4. He was at the center of power in Tennessee for more than two decades, first as speaker of the House of Representatives for 14 years and then as a two-term governor from 1987 to 1995.

Ever folksy, Mr. McWherter often joked during his campaign that he would need just four vanilla wafers and a cup of coffee to be ready to start work as chief executive. Friends said that kind of talk was central to his appeal and was genuine.

He was probably one of the greatest leaders in Tennessee History. As governor, Mr. McWherter lived in Nashville but remained true to his rural roots with what he called his "95-County Jobs Plan," which aimed to stimulate economic development beyond just the state's biggest cities. Mr. McWherter also pushed through a sweeping education reform package that equalized state funding for schools & raised graduation standards.

He sent a recipe for my cookbook “Country Goodness Recipes of Tennessee Celebrities.” From Palmersville, is mother owned & operated a small restaurant in Union City. His son Mike said his father’s fondest memories were helping his mother in the restaurant when he was growing up. She served this cake Lucille McWherter’s Cold Oven Pound Cake at the restaurant.

Lee Reherman of Louisville was a standout at Cornell University before playing pro football with the Miami Dolphins as part of their offensive line. While working on his PhD. at UCLA he could be seen as “Hawk” on the television series American Gladiators. He sent a recipe for BBQ Chicken for the cookbook "Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities."

Susie Dawahare and David Boggs, Directors of Paducah’s BARBECUE ON THE RIVER have opened bbQ & MORE at 321 Broadway. They are planning an Official Grand Opening in the near future.

The store and BBQ on the River are Community Charitable organizations. The store is to help promote and fund the Sept. main event.

They have invited me to do a book signing at the Grand Opening with proceeds going to Barbecue on the River. Stop by and help a great organization.

Each September, more than 15 tons of chicken and pork is smoked, grilled, and barbecued at this Also, Marine Industry Days and children's events on the riverfront. An annual event in which local volunteers donate proceeds of barbecue sales to charities and non-profit organizations of their choice. Regional media personalities compete to become the Grand Champion in the Media Cook-Off Tournament!

It's serious fun on Paducah's riverfront today as backyard cookers and professional competitors challenge each other in four categories: chicken, pork shoulder, whole hog and pork ribs. They have to enter all four categories to win the coveted Grand Champion title. Free live music, booth shopping, and a variety of activities, including a race, towboat tour and line tossing contest, keep folks coming back the three days. Games, pig calling and chicken clucking contests make this a unique event that's fun for the whole family.

I am doing a couple of blogs on contributors to the Kentucky cookbook “Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities,” who also participating in The Kentucky Crafted Market.One of the contributors is artist Lanette Freitag from LanMark Farm located in Sharpsburg, KY

About the farm:

The farm is a working sheep and cattle farm that has been supporting families since 1824. The land and buildings have been loved and cared for by many generations and the love of the land has always been deep rooted.

Today's innovations will continue to create a sustainable agriculture future for the farm.

Kentucky Folklore Program Director Bob Gates from the Kentucky Arts Council has invited me to do a presentation and book signing on the Food Stage at the 29th Kentucky Crafted, The Market in Louisville. I will be doing the presentation at 2:00 p.m. Sat. March 19th. This is such an honor for me! Stop by, as I will be preparing actress Reese Witherspoon’s favorite recipe.

I am doing a couple of blogs on contributors to the Kentucky cookbook “Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities,” who are also participating in The Market.

One of the contributors is artist Gary Bertram from Georgetown, KY. He will be at Booth 410 at the Kentucky Crated Market. He is such an incredibly talented artist.

Drawing has been one of Gary’s passions since he was a child, but he didn’t become a professional artist until later in life. He has spent the past twenty nine years working as either a teacher, a minister of music, or an associate pastor. However, during his college years, he started doing portraits of people, and for the last twenty years has been doing them on commission. Then in 2001, Gary became interested in wildlife portraiture, and in short order began exhibiting in some of the most elite wildlife art shows in the country, including the Safari Club International and the Southern Wildlife Festival, where in 2006 he won the coveted "People’s Choice Award." Gary has won numerous first place awards, including "Best of Show" and "Best of Professional" in many of the regional art shows.

Gary has also produced equine art of such high quality that it is registered with the Saddlebred Museum at the prestigious Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, as well as with the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea, Kentucky. In 2010, the Kentucky Arts Council nominated Gary to the Southern Artistry Organization. These artists are nominated based on the quality of their work by their state arts agencies, and is designed to spotlight the talent of the South's most acclaimed artists. Gary is also an associate member of the "Oil Painters of America.”

The Battle of the Alamo

No I did not drop off the face of the earth. I just returned from a stay in San Antonio, TX.

While there, I learned The Daughters of The Republic of Texas is hosting the 175th Anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo Events this year. What does this have to do with the Tennessee cookbook “Country Goodness Recipes of Tennessee Celebrities?”

I have 6 recipes with ties to Texas and those following my blog might find the Texas Ties interesting. The Friends of David Crockett State Park, Lawrenceburg, TN sent a historical recipe for David Crockett. Fess Parker sent a recipe as he played David Crockett in both movies and television. The curator for The Hermitage sent a recipe for Pres. Andrew Jackson, who was President at the time of the battle of the Alamo.

Megan Buro who is with the The Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville, Texas sent 3 recipes. One which was for Sam Houston, another which was used for the Sam Houston School House Historic Site. This is a log cabin school located in Maryville, TN and is the oldest school in Tennessee, built in 1794. Sam Houston taught there.

She also sent a recipe for John Ross, also known as Koo Wes Koo We. He was the Chief of the Cherokee Nation, when it was in TN, GA, and NC. He went to Texas with Sam Houston and fought with him at Horse Shoe Bend.

So, whether you are from Tennessee or Texas check this cookbook out. It has great recipes from amazing people, and is a celebration of our great heritage.
