ACADEMY AWARD WINNING AUTHOR TOM RICKMAN

ACADEMY AWARD WINNING AUTHOR TOM RICKMAN

In Gathering recipes for my Tennessee Cookbook, I have started collecting recipes from authors, writers, etc. I received a recipe from Sam Pickering (Robin William’s character from Dead Poet’s Society was based on him), John Rice Irwin Appalachian author and founder of the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, and a recipe for Banana Pancakes for Frances Hidgson Burnett (author of The Secret Garden). Her Biographer sent this recipe, she found while researching the book. The Tennessee Cookbook should go to the publisher in September.

I also said earlier, I would do blogs on various contributors for my Kentucky Cookbook. I am doing this on Academy Award winning writer Tom Rickman He sent a funny story that had to be edited to the publisher’s format and therefore I was unable to include. I am posting it today. If you want the entire recipe, you will have to get a copy of the cookbook “Favorite Recipes of Kentucky Celebrities. ENJOY!

MEATLOAF WELLINGTON

I tried this recipe once on a group of friends from whom the reviews were somewhat, well, guarded. It was, admittedly, an experiment: I wanted to make a down-home version of a Beef Wellington, substituting for its upscale (expensive) ingredients some very downscale (cheap) equivalents – meat loaf instead of a choice cut of beef, braunschweiger (or liverwurst) instead of pate de foie gras, etc. My guests applauded the political statement I was trying to make (they were Californians) while politely not asking for second helpings. I liked it though.

Make the meatloaf the way Mama made it (mine, anyway): a couple of pounds of hamburger, some diced onions and celery, maybe a carrot, and a can of tomatoes.

Tom Rickman from Sharpe, Ky ,whose screenwriting/directing feature movie credits include Oscar Winning “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” & “Truman,” for which he received an Emmy nomination, “Breakfast with Morrie,” “Berry Gordy’s Motown,” a miniseries.

Author Biography:
Kentucky native Pamela Whinnery, who put the cookbook together, said she did not think of herself as an author. She felt the real authors were all of the wonderful individuals who took time from their busy schedules to graciously share their favorite recipes. She believes they were willing to do this as they knew the cookbook & each recipe is to be a gift to be shared as a fundraiser for Non-Profit Organizations all across Kentucky. She is presently working on 2 other cookbooks: a second Kentucky cookbook and one with Tennessee celebrity recipes.

BOOK SIGNING TATER DAY

IT’S HERE!!!
THE 167TH ANNUAL BENTON, KY TATER DAY
MONDAY APRIL 5TH

This year I will be doing a BOOK SIGNING for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Team, at Stilley House Monday April 5 (TATER DAY) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition, Mike Driver and his wife Ann have graciously accepted an invitation to help me sign the cookbooks.

Mike contributed a recipe in memory of his father Restaurateur Jim Driver. Ann and mike are owners of historic Aire Castle Inn B&B, 413 Salem Chapel Road North, Benton, KY, near beautiful Kentucky Lake. Ann sent me a recipe for the Lady Ann's Hashbrown Heaven she serves to her guest at the Bed & Breakfast.

MORE ABOUT TATER DAY: Tradition claims Tater Day was established in 1842, the year Marshall County was founded. At that time first Monday in April marked the beginning of county court. Local people took this day to come to Benton and transact their business. Many traded for their needs and one of the main items traded was sweet
potato slips, hence 'Tater Day.'

Old timers can still remember when mule buyers came from the South and nearby states to trade and buy livestock. A special section of the court square was set aside near 13th and Poplar for the trading ring for horses, mules, hogs, and sheep. This horse-swapping ring was usually the busiest part of Tater-Day but plenty of other entertainment could be foundaround the court square.

Today Tater Day also includes a parade, giant 'Flea Market' is the antique lovers' delight, Horse races, pony-pulling contests, and a Four-Wheel Drive Drag Race.

BE SURE AND STOP BY TO GET A COPY OF THE COOKBOOK AND HELP OUT THE STILLEY HOUSE RELAY FOR LIFE TEAM!!!
